Mailman Made My Day

Thank you postal gods and goddesses for showering me with gifts today: my new shoes from Banana Republic (the perfect summer-to-fall transition shoes), my beautiful black and gold stethoscope, and all the other doctor-in-training goods... which I will hopefully know how to use someday in the very near future.

Nutella Stuffed French Toast

This is the perfect lazy Sunday morning (or afternoon) food that goes oh so perfectly with a big hot cup of coffee. Here's what you need for 4 servings:
  • 8 slices texas toast
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup light cream
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Nutella
  • syrup
  • powdered sugar (optional)
Heat a skillet to low-medium temperature. Mix the eggs, cream, cinnamon, and vanilla extract in a large bowl. Take two slices of texas toast, spread nutella on both, and put them together to make a sandwich. Dip the sandwich in the liquid mixture, making sure to coat all sides. Place it on a nonstick pan (or grease it up first with crisco or pam) and cook both sides. When done, put on a plate and add as much syrup and powdered sugar as you like! Enjoy!

Hurricane for the Hurricane!

Ok I felt like a complete cheat leaving you guys with WINE Friday instead of a real cocktail (not that there's anything at all wrong with wine, just Friday is cocktail time!). So sitting here waiting for the hurricane, all my guilt sinking in, I decided to make a hurricane for you all! And even if you're not on the East Coast waiting for Ms. Irene, make one for your friends who are! Here's what you need for one drink:
  • 4 oz orange juice
  • 4 oz grenadine
  • 2-3 oz white rum
  • ice cubes
Mix the OJ, grenadine, and rum, then add ice! Some people like pineapple juice with this drink as well, but I find it a little too sweet (it's already a very sweet drink). Enjoy the drinks and stay safe! xoxo

A Nautical Outfit for the Hurricane

I'm actually not really sure why I think a nautical outfit would be appropriate for the approaching hurricane, in fact rain boots and a poncho might serve me better. But what the heck this sailor inspired outfit and hurricanes fit together in my mind. This was really just a relaxed Saturday outfit though, I wouldn't get dressed up for the silly hurricane.

Maybe this fantastic apron will do me some good? Eh probably not either. I like to make jokes about these things, but seriously everyone on the East Coast stay safe, and hope (like I tell myself) the weather men are just being drama queens.

Fall To Dos

It's almost September now, and September = fall (yes yes technically-minded people I know the autumnal equinox isn't until September 23rd, but I don't care September is fall). Here's my to do list!

Included are my favorite fall fests and fairs, Rendez-Vous New England, maybe some fall camping? I've never been apple picking, probably because I'm allergic to apples (that's right folks, I fail at life and cannot enjoy a raw apple). But what the heck I think it'd be fun! Definitely need to restock my pumpkin spice candle supply and carve some pumpkins (because we forgot last year)! And of course make my favorite pumpkin cheesecake muffins! Brainstorming ideas for a cute couples' halloween costume. Oh and can't forget a haunted house or two and a corn maze! What's at the top of your fall to do list?

Kahlua Iced Coffee

It's Friday and that means drink time! This drink isn't fruity or even that fun looking, but it's one of my favorites (especially with something sweet on the side like cookies) and ridiculously easy. Here's what you'll need for one drink:
  • 1 cup of coffee
  • 1.5-2 oz Kahlua (I like the Hazelnut kind)
  • 1 oz light cream or half and half
  • sugar
  • ice cubes
Mix the coffee, Kahlua, creamer, and sugar in a glass and add ice cubes. If you want to prettify this drink you can top with whipped cream and sprinkle some cinnamon or add a few whole coffee beans on top.
** A trick to keep your drink from getting watered down by the ice cubes - when I make this drink I usually brew a whole pot of coffee in the morning and put the leftover coffee in the fridge, that way later in the day when you're ready to make it you only need a few (if any) ice cubes. Enjoy the drinks and have amazing weekends! xoxo

Friday's Fancies: Back to School

I'm already back at school, and unfortunately I've already wasted my one chance at a first-day-of-school outfit. But this post is all about a perfect back to school outfit, one a smart girl would wear on her way to school, smelling the crisp fall air (not the middle of August air) and drinking a caramel macchiato.

Chair Refurb

These are chairs I picked up at a tag sale this summer. It was a tough decision painting them white because the dark stain was pretty gorgeous, but I wanted a clean fresh look to the chairs. And of course I couldn't settle on a fabric color so I used the same pattern in both pink and beige! They still need a tiny bit of work, but what do you guys think?

White Coat

When I left class today the atrium was buzzing with excited parents and adorable old people. I wondered who all of these people were and then I remembered that today is the White Coat Ceremony! This ceremony involves first year medical students... getting their white coats. Pretty self-explanatory. And not nearly as fancy as it sounds. But it's a rite of passage nonetheless, and the commotion brought back memories of my own white coat ceremony one year ago.

(Almost) Fall Festivals

Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year, hands-down. Not just because of the cooler temps, the fall foliage, the baking, or the GEESE!!!(I absolutely love geese), or the fashion (mmm boots and chunky sweaters), or corn mazes (can you tell I could go on and on about things I love in the fall)... but because of the festivals! There's the local Armenian festival, then the Greek festival, then the Portuguese Festival, then the Big E, the largest fair in all of New England! This past weekend we went to the Puerto Rican festival, which is technically a summer festival, but for me it's more of an almost fall festival.

What's in the Bag: Back to School

Today was the first day of school! Inspired by my back to school bag post I decided to share what I actually brought for the first day of classes (a wonderful lecture on receptors and dose-responses might I add... cough, cough).

a folder with a handout of lecture notes; sadly I still like to use my good old paper and pen, but with all of the paper we got last year I'm seriously considering an iPad.

my favorite little coffee notebook to jot down random things.

a pink highlighter and pink pen (representing the fight against breast cancer as I learn how to fight it).

excedrin (unfortunately with all of the learning attempts at learning come headaches).

my keys, complete with rape whistle and all (don't make fun of me, I live alone and walk around aimlessly at night).

some i.d.'s so I can go places.

shades that were completely useless today.

little girly things like lip gloss (partially salvaged after the dog attack), oil blotters, and bobby pins, or else I'm one oily, frizzy mess.

I also had cookies... but I ate those.

What do you ladies carry with you to school/work?

Watermelon-Cucumber Punch

I made this drink last night and it was soooo refreshing! One last hurrah for summer! Here's what you need to make a pitcher:

  • 5 cups watermelon, cut into cubes
  • 1 cucumber, peeled and cut into small slices
  • juice from 1 lime
  • 1 cup simple syrup
  • 2/3 cup of vodka
  • Ice
  • Pitcher
In a blender, puree the watermelon. Pour it through a mesh sieve into your pitcher. Puree the cucumber and pour it through the sieve with the watermelon juice. Add the lime juice, simple syrup, and vodka. To make a cup, just put ice in a cup and pour your punch in! Enjoy! xoxo

Back to Neutral

Ask anyone that knows me what colors I wear... they'll say boring ones. All grey, tan, black... neutral. But that's ok because neutrals will always be my favorites of all time! Forever and ever. I tried to buy pink pants this summer, I really did, they were just too bright.

Dream Date Night

I just bought this cute surplus vest from old navy and have been thinking of what to wear it with. Olive green is one of my favorite colors that matches with almost anything! I think I'll wear it for date night today or friday... here's the dream outfit. I'll post what I actually wear soon! xoxo

Back to School Bag

My favorite time of the year is fast-approaching, back-to-school-time! Seriously, back to school shopping is the best. Ever since I was kid I've always loved organization, so a backpack with lots of pockets was a must, plus a pencil bag, an eraser bag (for my collection of awesome erasers of course), chapstick bag, you get the idea. Now I'm a little more grown up - no more backpacks - but I still love a chic bag with lots of pockets. Unfortunately with a medical student budget the bag I'm really crushing on right now (Anthro Lane Lines) may be a bit out of my reach at almost $300. Here are a few of my other pics!
