Happy Halloween!

October 31, 2011

As I shared in my Friday's Fancies last week, for Halloween I dressed up as Cruella Deville and my honey was my Dalmatian. Thank you everyone for your awesome comments on that post regarding the costume idea - I hope you like how it turned out! For Dave's costume he spray-painted black spots on a white shirt and white pants. I found the perfect hat at a random store (I'm pretty sure it's a kid's hat) and he used my Mr. T necklace (worn here) as a dog collar, attaching his name tag with tape that surprisingly lasted all night. For my costume I wore a black maxi dress I already owned and a white fur-looking coat we found at T.J.Maxx (thanks to my bestie Janice). I found a pair of red shoes at Saver's for $5 as well as the red gloves, and Dave made my cigarette holder by breaking a black plastic clothes hanger and painting the end. I finished the look with black and white hairspray, bold red lipstick, and a grey and blue smoky eye. The entire costume (Cruella and Dalmatian) came out to under $50!
Of course Halloween wasn't all cute stuff and Disney characters - we did have our fun with scary zombie costumes the weekend before! In this picture I played with the zombie eye feature on Picnik to make our looks even scarier! Did you guys dress up for Halloween this year? I wanna hear!

P.S. If you follow my Twitter you got to see a few of these pics before everyone else! If you'd like to see pics before they hit the blog (or hear random life details) make sure to follow me!

Pumpkin Cream Martini

October 29, 2011

It's been a while since I shared a drink recipe (my last drink was this apple cider), but we came up with these drinks last night before our halloween party and they were really good! Adding milk to a drink was new for me, but I needed to add something to balance out the strong flavored liqueurs - let me know what you think! Here's what you'll need for 2 servings:
  • 3 ounces pumpkin spice irish cream (or any pumpkin liqueur)
  • 3 ounces vanilla vodka
  • 2 ounces 1% milk
  • cinnamon or nutmeg
  • ice
Add all of the liquids to a martini shaker with ice cubes, shake, and pour in a glass. Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on top and enjoy!

Friday's Fancies: Halloween Edition

October 28, 2011

I'm horrible at keeping my own secrets. I tried my hardest to keep my halloween costume this year a secret, but I just couldn't help it! Last week Dave and I were last minute zombies, but our real costume this weekend - I'm going to be Cruella Deville and he'll be my dalmatian. The hardest part of the entire costume was finding a white fur-looking coat. Which got me to thinking, what outfit would I put together if money wasn't a concern? Well I'd start with this jaw-dropping Herve Leger Beaded Banded Dress that originally cost almost $18,000! Add on the fur coat that was another few thousands, the sexy $700 pumps, and some other accessories, and you've got one hell of an expensive halloween costume. Now my friends we all know I don't have anywhere near this kind of money and my budget was more like $50. But I made it work (I hope)!

P.S. I'd like us all to remember that Cruella Deville was a villainess - a super chic one - but still, she used the dalmatians' fur! And in the coat I used in this post, arctic white fox fur was used! I would never ever use real fur and hope all of you beauties wouldn't either. Look at these cuties! How could you hurt them?

Make sure to check out all the other awesome outfits over at Long Distance Loving today!

Mixing Knits

October 27, 2011

This could very well be the comfiest outfit I've ever worn to the hospital. So comfy in fact that I almost fell asleep curled up in the family meeting room waiting for my preceptor. I mean how could you not, I was practically wrapped up in different blankets by mixing these knits!
Sweater, Calvin Klein Jeans
Skirt, American Apparel
Tights, Target
Purse, thrifted ($3)
Patent Booties, Charlotte Russe

P.S. Unfortunately I didn't actually wear the little purse all day; all my clunky doctor tools and everything else I need to bring barely even fit in my largest of totes! Still on the hunt for a good doctor bag :)

100th Post!

October 26, 2011

I can't believe we've already reached our first blog milestone - 100 posts!
I started this blog right before second year of medical school got started really as a way to balance it all out. Sure during school I talk about all the serious medical stuff, but my blog is a space where I talk about the pretty and happy stuff - fashion, delicious food and drinks, beautiful homes, and amazing weekend activities! The name of the blog (which was my boyfriend's idea) came from all the furniture refurbs we were doing over the summer - we always added a little bit of lacquer at the end to make it pretty and shiny.

A Little Bit of Lacquer hasn't even been around for a full 3 months, but I am so thrilled and humbled by the response this little blog has gotten! Over 170 of you are my fabulous followers on Google Friend Connect, over 100 are fans on Facebook, and 100 are followers on Twitter. Even crazier, this little blog has hit over 32,000 views! And of course my favorite stat of all - your comments - all 700+ of them.

All of this sweet little success is because of you guys, my readers, and I'm so freaking thankful for you! I have said it before, but interacting with you and getting your comments really is what makes blogging so great.

So keep doing what you're doing and I'll try to keep up! xoxo

Ghost Stories

October 25, 2011

I think we can all agree it's definitely getting colder now. I doubt mother nature will toss us anymore 80 degree days, so I put away the shorts and sandals and pulled out the jackets and boots. I wore this outfit for a ghost tour we did last weekend with some friends that involved walking around haunted places in Boston. I made sure I bundled up so I wouldn't get any chills, from the weather or the ghost stories! Corny I'm sorry.

Weekend Recap

October 24, 2011

Monday, why are you always so eager to have your shine? Can't you let Saturday and Sunday have their time just a little bit longer? Probably not - this weekend was great despite its brevity. Friday Dave and I enjoyed our favorite pizza of all time - plain cheese from Bruno's. It seems really simple, but we look forward to this so much, especially since we've tried everywhere in Massachusetts and can't find anything that compares. We drank delicious red wine with this pizza (fancy, huh?), and then caught a late-night showing of Paranormal Activity 3. Saturday we went out for brunch, did some shopping, then enjoyed the gorgeous fall day. That evening we got ready for our first halloween party.

Dave and I had fun dressing up like zombies for our friends' party. It was sort of last minute but fun to put together (the costume I mentioned earlier is for our other halloween party this weekend). The concept was that we were a couple heading out to a fancy shmancy dinner and got attacked by zombies on our way there. Creative, huh? What can I say my creativity went towards the other costume! It was such a great night though. Sunday we grabbed brunch with the party hosts and then I caught an early bus back to Boston - I had Sunday dinner plans with my mentor doctor and her lovely family. Great end to the weekend. I hope all of your weekends were just as much fun!

P.S. did you see my dog being silly wearing his orange mask? I'm really thinking of making him an ewok for halloween. You know, from Star Wars? It was the role he was born to play.

Daytime Sparkle

October 21, 2011

I debated for a while whether or not it was appropriate to wear sparkles to the hospital. I decided it was quite alright, and this is what I wore on a rainy day in the hospital working up a recovering meningitis patient. She liked my sparkles, so it was all worth it.

Black and Blue

October 20, 2011

This outfit makes me feel like Mr. T.
Ok maybe not the whole outfit, pretty much just the necklace, it's very Mr. T-esque. I wore this dark outfit for psychiatry clinic (I promise the flash of the camera makes it waaay more see-through than it really is), where we saw a patient with narcissistic personality disorder. I couldn't believe this was actually a diagnosis, I mean - let's be real - sadly in our society it seems almost normal that people think highly of themselves. But narcissistic personality disorder is legit - look it up! I'm all for having self-confidence and accomplishing your dreams, but let's keep the diagnoses of NPD down, and never forget our humble beginnings.

New Stripes

October 19, 2011

It's no secret that I love thrifting. There's something so satisfying about going through racks and racks of crap and pulling out something beautiful. Part of what I love even more is the history a piece may have; I always wonder who owned it, what they wore it for, and how it made them feel. But every now and then you'll find that truly rare piece - the one that was never worn - with the tags still on it, extra buttons still in a little plastic bag and all. That's what happened with this Michael by Michael Kors shirt that I snagged for $4. Imagine how surprised I was when I saw the same shirt online for 30% off, and still $74! Thrifting is the best.

Catwalk for a Cure

October 18, 2011

Last Thursday I attended Catwalk for a Cure, an amazing event put together by the young and inspiring Bryan Finocchio. Despite having trouble finding something pink to wear, I threw something together and headed out to the State Room on the 33rd floor of Sixty State Street. There the first event was a cocktail and silent auction, including complimentary appetizers and pink cocktails. Models lined the border of the room showing off Zack Lo's shoe designs and photographers and interviewers grabbed you for a shot. My favorite booth was the Stella and Dot jewelry collection- can you guess which of these gorgeous necklaces caught my eye?
I, like many others, have been affected by breast cancer having lost someone to this horrible disease of cells gone awry. But having also done breast cancer research and being in the medical field, I know many of the companies claiming their product benefits breast cancer are really just trying to make more profits. At this event though, a representative from the Susan G. Komen For the Cure branch in Massachusetts gave a touching speech, describing exactly where this money would go - towards educational outreach, towards annual mammograms, even towards transportation to those mammograms, a luxury many of us take for granted. The room for the fashion show was lit with pink and the views of Boston Harbor and the city surrounded us - a perfect set up.
My favorite part of the entire show was the models. Yes the designers showcased many of their looks on the typical models, but they also included real women who have had or are still fighting breast cancer. As each of them walked down the runway, the audience cheered them on emphatically, bringing tears to my eyes. I pictured my gorgeous mother-in-law walking down the runway and having the time of her life. Words can't describe how beautiful these women are.
The designers at the show included Candice Wu, Julie Montesion, Julie Kontos, Drea Couture, Nicole Herzog, Janice Louise Miller, and my personal favorite, Project Runway contestant Wesley Nault. The neutral color palette, the shapes, and the little floret-like details were fabulous.
I had a fabulous time, and have to thank my fellow Boston Fashionista, Kristen, for being my companion for the night and snapping a few pictures of me being silly.
It was a wonderful night had by all. Thank you to Bryan and his team for putting on such a fabulous event, inviting these strong women to walk the runway like the beauties they are, and benefitting breast cancer research and outreach efforts. I hope to see you there next year!

Weekend Recap

October 17, 2011

Happy Monday lovelies! It's Monday again (boo) but I'm being super positive about the week (yay) - it helps that the weekend was amazing! After beating my neurology final exam into submission Friday, Dave came over with chinese food and bubble tea (the first of many this weekend - I think it's safe to say I'm addicted) and we spent the rainy night camped in watching scary shows (American Horror Story, anyone?). Saturday was spent enjoying the weather in the North End around the harbor and Quincy Market, where I got a fabulous nutella crepe and Dave grew a bad-ass stache. Later we grabbed drinks and a delicious dinner at a hidden spot by the Common, and then embarked on our Ghost Tour of the city with some friends, which was so much fun! Who knew the Boston Common was one of the largest unmarked grave sites in all of Boston? Sunday we grabbed brunch in Jamaica Plain at the cutest little sun-filled restaurant, went thrift-shopping for our halloween costumes (no luck), and watched football (awesome win Pats!) I hope your weekends were just as much fun!

Sunday Brunch

October 16, 2011

Snapped a few pictures on our way back from brunch! It's so gorgeous outside; temperatures in the 60s and the sun shining brightly made for a great early afternoon walk. The rest of the day will be spent cuddling up watching football :)

Paucity of Pink

October 14, 2011

Pink is a color that has no place in my closet. Except for a pair of VS sweatpants and undergarments, I own nothing pink. So you can imagine my dilemma when I had to find an outfit for a pink-themed fashion show benefitting breast cancer research and outreach. I pulled together these black and grey items from my closet and played with a tiny bit (the tiniest possible bit) of color by adding pale pink lipstick. The event was absolutely amazing, I had to fight back tears multiple times; I'll be writing a post about it very soon! I hope you all enjoy your weekends; I've finished my neurology class today and can now enjoy a halloween-themed weekend!

Knit and Olive

October 13, 2011

This was my let-me-inspect-your-thyroid-outfit. Feeling things under the skin with your hand is a little bit difficult when you've never felt them at all, it really takes some getting used to (or for the lovely patient to put your finger where their nodule is). Before we got to the patients though I was the neck model and the physician demonstrated the thyroid exam on me. Apparently I have a graceful swan-like neck (which I manage to shrivel up in every picture) but a really pitiful thyroid. Meh.

Halloween Costume!

October 12, 2011

I think I've mentioned it already, but fall is my favorite time of year. I've crossed so many things off of my fall to do list - the next one to cross off: think of cute couple's halloween costume. Last year my honey was Colonel Sanders (you know, the KFC guy?) and I was a chicken! It was so much fun going around thrift stores and craft stores to make the costumes! For Dave's outfit we thrifted a white button-up, white track pants (that he had to wear inside-out), a ribbon, and some old frames. For my outfit I used a plain white tank top, some boa feathers clipped to shorts, feathers in my hair, yellow tights, and yellow dishwashing gloves for my chicken feet! And of course a handmade KFC-bucket-purse. Best halloween ever! This halloween we're trying to beat last year's costume though, I can't wait to put it all together! The costume is still a secret of course ;) What were you guys for halloween last year? Anyone else do a couple's costume?

Fall Heat

October 11, 2011

Those of us in New England got a treat this weekend with gorgeous sunny skies, temperatures in the 80s, and the colors of fall beginning to show. I took advantage of the weather and spent as much time as I could outside, baring some skin that will all too soon have to be covered back up again with chunky knits and tights. Random awesomeness: can you spot the squirrel?

Weekend Recap

October 10, 2011

What a great two days! I didn't go home to Springfield this weekend, but Dave surprised me and drove here Friday after work! We spent the night eating homemade pizza and watching and dancing to old music videos from our adolescence. I surprised him back with breakfast in bed, then later we grabbed lunch at an amazing Venezuelan restaurant. We had delicious arepas de carne mechada and tajadas (in Puerto Rico we call them maduros), and I drank it all down with a coconut mojito. Then he left so I could have girl time - in the afternoon my best friend arrived, and we went straight for the shopping! I haven't been shopping in so long (besides thrift stores), so I splurged just a tiny bit. Sunday we went to the vintage market, enjoyed the abundant sunshine in the public garden, and I had yummy bubble tea for the first time  (I'd love to know what your favorite flavors are)! The weekend isn't over for some of us (something about some guy "discovering" a place), but for me the fun is. Studying for my neurology final all day today, wish I could be doing my reading like the girl below... instead I'll probably be in the library. I am determined to get some pumpkin frozen yogurt though! Hope you lovelies had wonderful weekends!

Weekend Animal

October 8, 2011

It's the weekend!!! And there will be three whole days in this weekend! A reason to celebrate if I ever needed one. Of course my neurology final is this week, but I won't let that get me down. My best friend (since middle school) is coming to visit me in Boston this weekend - which means lots of shopping and eating! Do you ladies have any fun plans for the weekend?
