Birthday Wishes to an Angel
October 1, 2011
"Keep the post short and sweet, short and sweet" I keep telling myself as I fight the lump building up in my throat.
Today I want to wish a very happy birthday to one of the most beautiful women I've ever had the privilege of meeting, Dave's mother, Charlene Assarian. This is the first birthday without her; late last year she finally got to truly rest and be freed of the suffering caused by breast cancer. It has to be more than coincidence that her birthday falls on the first day of October, the first day of breast cancer awareness month. Please make sure the beauties in your life are getting their mammograms and keeping up with the rest of their health; check out this website if you'd like more info.
I always get so angry when I see mother-in-laws portrayed as these evil, possessive, annoying women you just can't wait to get rid of. I think it's not fair, I think in my head "why do you still get to even have a mother-in-law if you dislike her so much, and I can't have one, she was taken too soon." I know I shouldn't think like that, but she seriously would have been the best mother-in-law. I remember talking to her on her birthday last year, describing to her what I had to do with my cadaver in anatomy lab, and she joked that I would never be able to look at raw meat the same way again! Love her.
Today we're celebrating her birthday, celebrating her memory, and I get the privilege to celebrate with her true legacy - the amazing family she raised, the best family I know.

this is such a beautiful post. may she rest in peace. i'm sure you did something lovely for her birthday. lovely blog!

I'm so sorry for your lost. My grandmother and aunt are both Breast Cancer survivors so I know how hard it is. Great post & blog
ReplyDeleteThis is a really touching post Laura. My thoughts are with you and Dave as this day was probably tough for you- but remembering Charlene for her strength and spirit as you did above is the best way to honor her.
